What is the purpose of the Advent wreath? It is a teaching tool, teaching us many important truths of the Christian faith.

The green wreath signifies the eternal life that God grants through his Son Jesus Christ.

The wreath has five candles. One candle each for the 4 Sundays of Advent. The fifth candle in the center for Christmas.

Candle one (purple): The Prophecy Candle, reminding us of the Old Testament prophecies which foretold of the coming of Christ (Genesis 3:15 and Isaiah 7:14 for example)

Candle two (purple): The Bethlehem Candle, reminding us of the birthplace of Christ, as foretold in the Old Testament prophet Micah, chapter 5:1-3.

Candle Three (pink): The Shepherd Candle, highlighting the joy of the shepherds who were told by the angel to seek the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger.

Candle four (purple): The Angel Candle, recalling the importance of the angel messenger Gabriel who announced to Mary that she had been chosen by God’s grace to bear the Son of God (Luke 1:26-38).

Candle five (white): the Christ Candle, reminding us of the purity of Christ, who is God and man, the Light of the World, who came to save us from our sins, Luke 2:1-14.

We don’t enjoy being laid low, but that is just what the Lord does: he lays us low so that we confess our sins for what they are: rejection of his Person, Word, and Will. But this is not the end. He lays us low so that he can lift us up again in Jesus, his Son, the Christ, the one Savior of the World. Jesus was laid low at the cross for our sins and then rose again from death. So it will be for all who believe: we will be lifted up from sin and death, right into heaven. A sermon based on 1 Samuel 2:1-10

What is the Lutheran Reformation? It is the reformation which God brought about through a young Roman Catholic monk Martin Luther. God led Luther to see that salvation was not dependant on works like penance or on the authority of the Pope. Rather, Luther learned through his study of Scripture that salvation is by faith in Jesus Christ, apart from works. The Lutheran Reformation began on Oct 31, 1517, when Luther posted 95 statements (“95 Theses”) for public debate. Soon these statements were mass produced and spread throughout Germany. Ultimately the Reformation was founded on three Scriptural Pillars: Salvation by grace alone in Jesus Christ; Salvation by faith alone apart from works, Salvation by Scripture alone.

You are welcomed to worship with us at Faith Lutheran Church on October 30, 2011. Reformation Sunday!
